Australia has some pretty amazing native birds and wildlife. This one is a juvenile scaly breasted lorikeet that was handed into us. We organised for our bird carer to collect it for rehabilitation with intentions of release when able.

Coco and Noodle visited us recently for their professional dental scale and polish under general anaesthetic.
Did you know: The oral bacteria associated with dental disease can enter the bloodstream and affect distant organs like the heart, liver, and the kidneys.
The best way to minimise the damage (associated with dental disease) to these distant organs is to be proactive in treating and preventing your pets dental disease. There are two components to their dental care: what you do at home (home care) and veterinary care.
At home you can brush their teeth daily, or use other alternatives we might recommend for your pet in consult (oral rinses, dental chews and dental kibble). When your pet presents for a professional dental clean, dental X-rays may be recommended as well as any necessary treatment such as extractions to treat their dental disease.

We hope everyone has a lovely Easter weekend. Just remember that lots of our Easter treats are NOT treats suitable for your dogs (or cats) to enjoy. The main culprits are chocolate and hot cross buns (either ones with chocolate or saltanas/raisins). Already we have seen a dog this week who has eaten an ENTIRE bag of hot cross buns. Please keep this food locked away/out of reach. If doing Easter egg hunts, please keep the dogs locked away during all the fun and make sure all chocolate has been found and collected before letting them in the egg hunt areas. If they do eat any of these delicious treats, please take them to an emergency centre if over the weekend for appropriate treatment as soon as is possible. HOPPY EASTER from the team at Red Hill Vets!

It’s not often we play dress-ups with our patients, but Honey possibly got into some rat bait which can be fatal for dogs and cats. Part of the treatment protocol when this has happened is giving the dog some activated charcoal to help bind any remaining toxin. Administering charcoal can be a VERY MESSY process, so for Honey we decided to dress her in a surgical gown in attempts to keep her as clean as possible. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, she didn’t go home squeaky clean!
